A man and woman touch foreheads with their eyes closed in a double-exposure image blending their figures with sunset clouds and a wildflower meadow.

Yes, your ex may come back, but no reunion is ever guaranteed. Former partners sometimes reconnect after a temporary separation, a change in circumstances, or personal growth.

Whether your ex comes back is, however, a layered question involving emotions, timing, free will, and other spiritual and psychological factors. Because every love connection is unique, an expert relationship psychic can help you explore the possibilities in your relationship situation.

Key things to consider:

  1. A strong spiritual connection does not automatically imply a future relationship. Lingering affection, soulmate suspicions, recurring dreams, and intuitions or gut feelings are often meaningful signs, but do not guarantee someone will return.

  1. “Coming back” can mean very different things. A message, an apology, renewed dating, and a lasting partnership are separate possibilities.

  1. Psychic perspectives differ. Some practitioners report that certain reunions are predestined, while others see reconciliation as always dependent on free will, personal choices, or whether the obstacles that separated two people can be overcome. Many psychics also emphasize the role of spiritual growth and life lessons and even the possibility that a karmic connection has fulfilled its purpose without reconciliation.

  1. The reason you separated matters. Distance, demanding careers, family pressures, or a difficult period in life may change. A repeated pattern of dishonesty or incompatible goals is a different problem.

  1. The intention and commitment of both parties matter. While an ex may come back, a truly lasting reconciliation and a long-term future together depend on both partners wanting the relationship to work and actually addressing the problems that caused the breakup.

  1. Feelings are only part of the picture. Two people can still love each other and make different choices about their future. Even a deeply spiritual connection does not remove either person's free will.

  1. Be aware of the real possibilities an expert relationship psychic can help you explore. The useful questions are what actually works between you, what might need to change, and whether a reunion would be healthy for both people... not simply when your phone will ring.

Why does an ex sometimes come back?

Often a relationship ends because the mutual love and care were no longer there. Sometimes it ends because two people could not make their lives work together at that time. Those are very different situations, and they can lead to very different future outcomes.

Think of a couple who separate when one moves away to finish college or take a demanding new job. They might still care for each other, but neither is willing to give up the opportunity. Years later, one moves home, or both have more freedom to choose where they live. The circumstance that kept them apart has genuinely changed.

Now, think of two people who keep breaking up after having the same arguments, over and over again. Every time, they start missing each other, decide to make up, and enjoy a few good weeks together. Then the old issues return. They may reunite several times in this way without ever establishing a healthy, sustainable relationship.

Researchers have investigated why couples reunite. In a 2011 study of people who had experienced on-again, off-again dating, professor René Dailey and her colleagues found that lingering feelings are a major reason couples get back together. The same is true for uncertainty about whether the breakup was truly final and the belief that another attempt could improve the relationship.

In other words, love doesn't always end when a relationship does and lingering feelings are therefore an especially common reason couples reunite. But according to Dailey's research findings, exes also return to former partners for other reasons:

Reasons Why An Ex Might Return

Lingering love

They still have romantic feelings for their ex and want another chance at the relationship.

Familiarity

Returning to someone they know feels more comfortable than starting a new relationship.

Loneliness

They miss having a partner and hope getting back together will fill that emptiness.

A change of heart

Time apart gives them a different perspective on their ex, their relationship, or what went wrong.

Disappointing dating experiences

After meeting other people, they realize they preferred what they had with their ex.

Regret

They believe ending the relationship was a mistake, perhaps because they acted too quickly or out of anger.

Guilt or obligation

They agree to reunite because they feel responsible for their ex's unhappiness, even if they aren't sure they want the relationship.

Key takeaway: Someone returning because they genuinely want to rebuild the relationship is very different from someone returning because they're lonely, afraid of being alone, or feeling guilty.

Is getting back with your ex worthwhile?

Yes, sometimes it actually is. A 2013 study of people in on-again, off-again relationships found that some couples experience real improvement and handle their breakups and reunions more successfully due to them splitting up and reuniting more than once.

However, some couples also reported a mixture of positive and negative experiences, along with continuing difficulties deciding whether they were actually still together or finally apart. In other words, getting back together can mean steady progress and growth for some couples, while for others it means that nothing has really been improved or settled.

Psychotherapist Esther Perel says a successful second chance requires both partners to recognize their part in the problem and to learn to respond differently to each other. As she puts it, they need to “write a new story together, rather than editing an old one.” The reunited partners do not have to become entirely different people in order to remain together, but they do need to change how they treat and communicate with each other.

What would actually need to change?

Why the relationship ended

What could make a reunion possible

What returning alone would not solve

Distance, work, or competing responsibilities

A move, a realistic plan, or renewed time for the relationship

The same lack of time and attention

A painful conflict or broken trust

Honest discussion, accountability, and consistent changes in behavior

The original hurt or the risk of repeating it

Different priorities or stages of life

Both people wanting a similar future now

One person sacrificing everything to keep the other

An on-again, off-again pattern

Both people understanding and changing what caused earlier breakups

Missing each other until the next argument

Emotional distance or growing apart

Rebuilding closeness on purpose, with regular quality time and open check-ins

The disconnection itself, if neither person changes how they relate

Frequent fighting or poor communication

Learning new ways to handle conflict, often with counseling or outside support

The same escalation cycle returning after the honeymoon phase

Incompatible long-term goals (children, marriage, where to live)

A genuine change in one or both people’s goals, discussed openly

Hoping the other person will eventually come around

Pressure from family, friends, or culture

Both partners’ commitment holding up without outside approval, with clear boundaries

Doubts and disapproval resurfacing once you’re together again

Uncertainty about the breakup itself

Clarity about whether you want this relationship, not just relief from the pain of separation

A decision that was never really settled, so the doubt returns

Controlling, aggressive, or unsafe behavior

Safety first, with professional support, and in many cases a reunion isn’t advisable

Love or a strong connection; it does not make the behavior safe

When the right person comes along at the wrong time

Psychic medium and destiny coach Anthon St. Maarten describes what clients often call meeting "the right person at the wrong time." In his career he has witnessed many such temporary separations linked to education goals, career-building, raising children, and what he calls a "midlife transformation" later in life, that he believes we all eventually have to navigate as part of our life journey and soul evolution.

A couple may have cared deeply for each other but lacked the time, freedom, or maturity to build the life they wanted together. When those initial difficulties or obstacles eventually change, a second chance often becomes possible for the couple. Neither person has done anything terribly wrong. Their lives simply did not fit together in the right way, at the right time.

This can also happen decades into a stable marriage, says St. Maarten. After many years devoted to career, business, and raising a family, spouses may wake up one day and discover that they have individually changed in significant ways. He describes this midlife transformation period as a kind of "spiritual adolescence" when people rethink who they truly are, where they have been, and what they still want from the remaining years of their life ahead.

If a couple stops talking honestly during this midlife rediscovery and reinvention of who they really are, they can begin to feel like complete strangers to each other. He has also had clients who divorced due to midlife challenges, only to later remarry each other after a few years apart.

But there is a catch. Time apart doesn't magically repair a relationship. If two people separated because they could not live in the same city, a change of location might help. If they separated because one kept lying or cheating, a passage of three years means very little unless that person's behavior has radically changed, as well as the wronged party being able to forgive and move forward.

From a spiritual perspective, a reunion between two people may happen when both are ready and the time is right.

But this does not mean someone should sit still and wait for fate to do all the work, explains St. Maarten. People still have to make their free will choices, have difficult conversations, and sometimes take courageous practical steps to make a shared life and lasting union possible.

And sometimes the separation is meant to be, and usually in everyone's best interest. An ex might choose to move on, fall in love with someone else, or decide that the relationship they once wanted no longer suits the life they have built. A past connection may remain meaningful without becoming a future partnership. Not all couples are meant to be together.

Are soulmates destined to reunite?

Psychic medium Matt Fraser says people who are truly soulmates will eventually reconnect. In his experience some separations are part of a larger divine plan: time apart can lead to a deeper relationship, or it can reveal that the couple was not meant to stay together. Fraser believes that if they have a lasting soul connection it will eventually bring them back into each other's lives.

Edgar Cayce, one of the most influential American psychics of the twentieth century, helped shape the modern Western understanding of soulmates through his readings on reincarnation and spiritual relationships. He taught that people may feel deeply connected because their souls have shared experiences across previous lifetimes.

But for Cayce, a soulmate connection was about much more than romantic attraction. In reading 1556-2, he describes soulmates as people who complement one another and support each other's mental and spiritual growth.

Cayce also recognized that a spiritual connection does not automatically guarantee a romantic reunion. In reading 518-2, he was asked whether souls united in the beginning were destined to reunite or could choose differently. He answered, “Choose otherwise.” But the very next question asked whether the souls had originally been brought together for a particular reason. Cayce confirmed, “United; for a purpose.”

The two answers belong together. His teachings recognize meaningful soul bonds between people while allowing them the freedom to decide what becomes of those relationships. In another reading, 257-15, when asked what would become of a couple's union, his answer was equally direct: “What they make it!”

Going back further, the founder of Spiritism, Allan Kardec, rejected the idea that everyone has one exclusive other half somewhere in the universe. Instead, he described degrees of spiritual closeness and harmony. He also affirmed in The Spirits' Book that human beings have freedom to act. This is a different picture from the popular soulmate idea of one special person you absolutely must find, and never let go.

Psychic medium and spiritual blogger Amanda Linette Meder offers another view. She believes souls agree before birth to meet for a shared purpose. But she also says such a relationship should come together naturally, without chasing or forcing it, and that marriage is not necessarily its purpose. In Meder's view, soulmates can be romantic partners, friends, or other supportive people in one's life.

Anthon St. Maarten argues that a genuine soulmate partnership with a shared spiritual mission is less common than is often assumed. It is not something every person is automatically destined to experience in their lifetime. He regards a true soul connection as something that helps people fulfill their purpose and destiny together. More importantly, he says, constant drama, manipulation, and suffering are not, in his experience, reliable signs of such a spiritual bond.

So, if you are convinced your ex is your soulmate, what follows from that belief? The answer depends on your personal spiritual understanding. But, bear in mind, there may be a potentially important consequence here.

In an essay titled The Divine Grace Of A Soulmate Connection, Anthon St. Maarten recounts a client who regretted leaving a long marriage after becoming involved with a man she believed was her soulmate. Her later relationship turned very harmful, her life eventually fell apart, and she wished she could undo her earlier decision. The warning is concrete: firmly believing someone is their soulmate can make a person ignore dangerous red flags they would otherwise recognize.

Mystical teacher Neville Goddard taught that our imagination shapes our life experience. Yet in the question-and-answer portion of his 1968 lecture Power, he challenged people who insisted they must marry one particular person. He urged them to focus on being happily married rather than insisting that only this one specific person could fulfill that desire.

Astrologer Stina Garbis raises a similar concern. She warns that telling someone a former partner is their one and only destined counterpart can create unnecessary anxiety and make it harder to move forward with their life. A spiritual label may describe how someone understands a particular connection, but it does not establish whether the other person shares that understanding or wants to rebuild the relationship.

A label like twin flame, karmic partner, or soul contract should also never become a reason to accept mistreatment or dismiss another person's clear rejection as "temporary because they just have to grow a little more spiritually". A bond may feel very sacred to you while the relationship itself is wrong for you or not something the other person really wants.

This is one of the key reasons why it is vital to consult with reputable and truly gifted psychics when you have serious questions about a love connection, a confusing relationship, or an ex coming back into your life.

Why free will makes reconciliation complicated

The term free will is so often heard in psychic readings and spiritual discussions that it has somewhat lost its true meaning. In a breakup, however, it has a very practical and very important meaning: you are not the only person making all the choices and decisions.

Anthon St. Maarten explains this through the example of an ex who leaves for somebody else. At first glance, the question seems to involve only two people: you and your ex. In reality, there is now a third person's intentions to consider, not to mention children, other family members, and even friends. There are many cooks in the kitchen that have a say in how things might ultimately turn out for you and your ex. A single choice or change of heart can shift what is possible overnight.

This is where the true value of a psychic relationship reading lies. He explains that a reading can reveal the true feelings, intentions, free will choices, and spiritual connections of the people involved, along with the potential outcomes and probabilities the psychic perceives at the time of the reading. It can also explore how different choices or actions by the client might open up new possibilities. Sometimes, however, he perceives no realistic path to reconciliation and believes the ethical response is to tell the client the truth.

Psychic Michele Knight-Waite makes an important related point. She says an ex may still have feelings yet choose not to act on them, or may change their mind later. She also points out that someone asking whether an ex will return may be struggling with deeper emotional patterns involving abandonment fears or low self-worth. Exploring these patterns during a reading can sometimes change the question entirely.

The person may discover that they want a healthier relationship, whether with their ex or someone new. They might even realize they no longer want their ex back at all. For Knight-Waite, the purpose of a reading is to encourage greater self-understanding and personal empowerment, not leave someone waiting indefinitely for another person's decision.

This is one reason no relationship reading about an ex coming back should ever be treated as a binding promise! A practitioner might perceive the potential for a reconciliation, but your ex still has to decide for themselves to take that step, and there may be other people whose choices or actions may further influence that.

Equally, a difficult relationship or break-up situation now does not prove that in the future it can never change. The important thing is to find out what is actually possible, not to turn one psychic impression into a life-long guarantee.

Do dreams, signs, or synchronicities mean your ex is coming back?

After a breakup, people often dream about their former partner, repeatedly hear a song that reminds them of the relationship, or encounter the person's name everywhere. Some interpret these experiences as spiritual signs. Others experience them as part of longing, grief, and memory. The experience can be powerful either way.

Dreams are a good example of why interpretation matters. In a 2021 study of 1,612 recorded dreams, Michael Schredl and Lara Wood found that former partners did appear in people's dreams. The dreams included both positive and difficult encounters. The study examined dream content, not whether dreams predicted a real-world reunion. It shows that dreaming about an ex is a real and common human experience, but it does not establish that the ex is about to return.

Psychics and spiritual practitioners will often interpret a particular dream as meaningful guidance. At times they might also see it as a sign that the dreamer still has feelings or unfinished business. The dream's emotional impact, however, is not a confirmation that your ex intends to come back. If the dream inspires you to think differently about the relationship, that may be more useful, even if no reunion follows.

Can manifestation, love spells, or other metaphysical practices bring back an ex?

Manifestation and magical practices are an important consideration for anyone consulting a psychic for relationship advice.

Generally practitioners do not recommend metaphysical attempts to override another person's free will and typically argue that a lasting, happy reunion depends on two people freely wanting to be together. Whatever spiritual practice you follow, trying to influence, manipulate, or control an ex is generally not seen as a sustainable path to a healthy, lasting relationship.

Professional members of the International Psychics Association, for example, are expected to honor their profession by respecting the free will of all individuals and "to not offer to influence another against their will, such as promising to bring a person to love them."

Former private investigator and psychic mediumship researcher Bob Olson warns against practitioners who promise to cast love spells that will make an ex return, or make someone fall in love with you. He identifies this as a common psychic scam, sometimes involving hundreds or even thousands of dollars.

Olson, however, distinguishes these promises from personal spiritual practices such as prayer, candle rituals, and setting intentions. Psychic medium Tana Hoy offers another sensible alternative: to send loving thoughts telepathically to an estranged partner.

Such practices help people focus their hopes and desires, but they do not attempt to control or interfere with another person's feelings or decisions. Olson's advice is especially relevant to people desperate for reconciliation: be extremely cautious of anyone who guarantees your ex will return in exchange for an expensive spell or ritual.

Psychic Marjorie Young also opposes using love spells to bring back an ex. When clients ask her to influence a former partner, she invites them to reverse the roles: how would they feel if they had left an unhappy or abusive relationship and their ex tried to use magic to compel them to return?

Young argues that this simple change in perspective exposes the unfairness of trying to override another person's choices. If a reunion, she says, has any hope of working then both partners must participate of their own free will. For her, letting go of the desire to control an ex is part of spiritual growth and learning through a breakup.

Herbalist and intuitive consultant Jessica Jascha takes a different approach. She approves of love spells aimed at a specific person, arguing that influencing another's choices is not inherently unethical. However, she maintains that a spell cannot force someone to fall in love or create feelings where no romantic potential exists to begin with. She believes such spells may encourage a relationship only when attraction is already possible.

Jascha also warns, however, that these practices can intensify the spellcaster's own feelings, potentially leading to unhealthy attachment or obsession. She therefore advises avoiding spellwork driven by desperation.

What Can You Do If You Still Hope Your Ex Will Return?

First, look closely at why the relationship ended, without explaining the difficult parts away as "fate" or "destiny" or a third person's interference. If distance kept you apart, ask whether living in the same place is now realistic. If communication broke down, ask whether both people are prepared to listen and change. If trust was betrayed, a declaration of love is not a substitute for taking responsibility and rebuilding it.

If an unethical or inexperienced psychic tells you that your ex will most definitely come back to you, their prediction may cause you to put your life on hold, only for you to become increasingly frustrated when the anticipated reunion fails to materialize.

No psychic prediction of a reunion is ever guaranteed. Instead, it makes more sense to examine why you actually want your former partner back and whether your hopes reflect what the relationship was really like. Understanding your true motives and knowing what you genuinely want is just as important as discovering what your ex might do next.

Second, pay attention to what your ex actually chooses, not only to what you hope they feel. An apology, a clear desire to discuss reconciliation, and consistent efforts to address what went wrong tell you more about their present intentions than an occasional late-night message, or an ambiguous social media post.

Third, decide what you are willing to accept. You can remain open to a second chance without agreeing to an endless series of breakups. You can love somebody and still decide that the relationship as it stands is not good for you. If there was intimidation, coercion, or abuse, safety comes before the hope of reconciliation.

Finally, a reading with a gifted relationship psychic or medium can offer you a deeper perspective on the spiritual aspects of your bond, the people involved, and the possibilities they perceive for the future of the connection. Work with a psychic practitioner who is willing to discuss more than a quick and easy reunion.

A meaningful psychic consultation should also leave room for an unwelcome answer, your own judgment and intuition, and your ex's free will to choose. It should not make you dependent on repeated assurances, or sell you a guaranteed result.

So, Will Your Ex Come Back?

Possibly. Successful reconciliation happens for many people.

  • Sometimes two people separate because life pulled them apart, then find that they are ready for each other later.

  • Sometimes people reunite because they never stopped caring, only to discover that the reasons for the breakup are still there.

  • And sometimes a relationship has reached its end.

The four common outcomes of an ex coming back:

Your ex comes back, and you get back together.

After spending time apart, you both decide to give the relationship another chance. Whether it lasts depends on your willingness to address the original reasons you separated.

Your ex reconnects, but you don't get back together.

They may contact you, apologize, or express renewed affection without making a commitment to restart the relationship.

Your ex does not return at first, but you eventually reconnect.

At first you do not hear from them, but then you find your way back to each other many months, or even years later.

Your ex doesn't come back.

Some separations are permanent, even when the emotional or spiritual connection felt significant. Some psychics interpret this as a relationship that has fulfilled its spiritual or karmic purpose.

Final thought: Your ex may come back, but the relationship you would be returning to, and the life you want to live, matter just as much as the return itself.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can an ex come still return after a long time apart?

Yes. People sometimes reconnect after major changes in work, location, family responsibilities, or personal priorities. Time apart can create a new opportunity, but only if both people want to explore it. Years passing by do not automatically repair the reason for the breakup.

If my ex still loves me, does it mean they will return?

No. Someone can retain affection, regret the breakup, or miss the companionship and still choose not to restart the relationship. Feelings matter, but intentions, actions, and each person's freedom to choose matter too.

I believe my ex is my soulmate or twin flame. Does that mean we will get back together?

Psychics disagree. Some say that true soulmates always reconnect, while others say souls have free will to choose differently. Some spiritual views see soulmate bonds as meaningful bonds without requiring a romantic reunion. A spiritual label is never a guarantee, and it does not excuse harmful behavior.

Does a repeating dream tell me my ex is coming back?

Many psychics agree that messages or predictions can show up as a recurring dream or lucid dream. But dreams can also reflect personal memories, lingering emotions, and unresolved concerns. A dream may be part of the larger picture, spiritually and/or psychologically, but on its own it should never be the deciding factor in waiting around for an ex to return.
